Understanding this global health crisis

Antibiotics: the heart of healthcare

From the day we’re born to the day we die, antibiotics help keep us safe. They are there to prevent and fight infection throughout our lives, including routine medical procedures. They have helped extend our life expectance by more than 20 years. It’s hard to imagine a world without them. But the reality is that the antibiotics we all rely on have a time limit, and their power is running out.

The rise of superbugs

Bacteria are constantly evolving. With every generation, they develop new ways of evading our treatments. They become ‘superbugs’, strong enough to withstand some of the world’s most powerful antibiotics. This is what we call antibiotic resistance or antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Over the past decade, we have seen an alarming increase of infections from resistant bacteria.

We need to act now.
